May 2, 2015 – Otis College of Fashion and Design held their 33rd Annual Otis Scholarship Benefit and Fashion Show at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.  About 900 attendees participated, including professionals in entertainment, fashion, business and finance, plus students, alumni and other supporters. Isobella & Chloe’s owner, Patrick Yang, represented our brand at the event and awarded the super-talented Michelle Kim with the Otis Thimble Award for having the best sketches and overall look for the fashion runway.

The event was such a rewarding experience — even one that filled me with a warm sense of pride.  We got to see everybody’s collaborative work coalesce into one grand and glitzy event.  We got to work with amazingly gifted students and dedicated staff, notably Rose Brantley and Katheryn Igarashi, who were both there with us through the whole semester-long mentorship program.

By imparting our brand’s knowledge and practical experience, Gloria Corpus and I hoped to give these talented student designers good insight on how to bring a swimwear collection to market. Our involvement gave students an inside look into the children’s fashion industry and how challenging and competitive it is to make a fashion line profitable. During this whole process, this Trina Turk quote from Inc. Magazine resonated with me, which was,

“I think the recession changed the industry for the better. People are thinking more about what they are purchasing. The customer is thinking, ‘Am I going to spend $350 of my hard-earned money on this dress?’ That’s how I shop – I’m only going to buy something that I love. It’s forcing the entire industry to create better products.”

Through this mentoring process, students learned the real-life design process: testing, manufacturing, fabrication techniques, materials, merchandising, and, most importantly, how to create knockout fashion. That is the major tenet at Isobella & Chloe, and an important lesson for these promising, talented, and creative individuals on the verge of branching off into their own trials in the fashion industry.

Since the theme of the Otis Fashion Show this year was water, we asked the students to create a girls’ swimwear collection inspired by the ocean’s delicate and stunning ecosystem. Inspiration came from the rich jewel-tones one would discover from the ocean, coral reefs, and sea life. The project was a commemoration to our oceans and a reminder to preserve our ocean life by living conscientiously and conserving water. This experience was a true reflection on how creating art through fashion can help promote the environmental message of conservationism and sound stewardship of our natural resources. It was a perfect example of what it means to be fashion-forward fashionista – where ones outfits truly represent our sentiments.

MAY IS THE MONTH TO CELEBRATE MOMS

We hope you and your family had a happy Mother’s Day celebration.
Since May is the month that we celebrate our mothers, we put the spotlight on our Brand Ambassador’s mothers. Madison, age 10, shares her thoughts and feelings about her mother, Sarah.

What did you and your family due to celebrate Mother’s Day?
I made Mothers Day cards and we all went to lunch. To me, my mother is awesome.

What are three interesting things to know about your Mom?
She takes selfies with me; she jumps on the trampoline with me, and she comes to all my school events.

What do you want to share about your grandmothers?
My Mimi is a realtor and she dances with me. My Memaw lives in Florida and we see her at the beach.

What does your mom do to make you laugh? When does your mom make you angry? Most happy?
I laugh when my mom dances; she makes me angry when I have to clean up my messes; she makes me happy when we go get snow cones on Fridays after school.

What do you and your Mom most like to do together?
We like to go shopping all day! I also love it when my Mom helps me with my dance recitals.

Share with us some memories about your mother and the things you like to do together!

When and how did you get started in children’s retail?
About six years ago I started planning a new business and had no idea what I was going to open.  I went to our City Developer and requested a report on where our tax dollars were leaving our county. I noticed that children’s clothing was a missing link. People were traveling to other areas to purchase those goods. That’s the beginning!

What was your background prior to this business?
My background was banking and I have been in the banking industry for as long as I can remember. First, I started as a debt collector then moved into a management position in the banking arena.  I loved banking and I came from a whole line of bankers.  I also married a banker.  I feel that it helped me take this business to another level.  In 2008 when times were difficult, because I had a strong business sense it disciplined me to manage my money from season to season. It played a roll in helping me be conservative.

What was the biggest challenge you faced when starting up?
My biggest challenge was to know how much to order from one season to the next. I like having a big selection for my customers. Having said that . . . you have to be careful not to overwhelm your customers with too many choices.

What are some tips about your business success?
In this business things are always changing, but I manage my money and I set goals.  Something else I strive to do in my store is having it neat and clean. It’s much easier for the customer to shop in an organized welcoming environment.

How long have you been a retailer of Isobella & Chloe? Why does the Isobella & Chloe do well in your store?
I started carrying Isobella & Chloe about 4 years ago. Fashion changes from season to season, but one thing that doesn’t change is that our moms still want their girls appropriately dressed with today’s fashion and Isobella & Chloe combines those two exquisitely! My customer is a loyal follower of Isobella & Chloe so the brand sells itself. My customers know the quality of Isobella & Chloe.

What advice do you have for someone entering children’s retail today?
Be prepared for the unexpected and handle your finances well.

Why do you like doing business with Isobella & Chloe?
I was fortunate to start off with an impeccable company like Isobella & Chloe, with their knowledgeable staff that knows the business well. Their employees and sales representatives are NOT order takers. They know the business and what it takes to make my business viable. The sales representatives have my best interest in mind when they work my order.  That is what I looked for in the beginning of opening my store and keeping it successful.

I pick vendors that I can rely on and Isobella & Chloe delivers in a timely manner, which in return benefits my business.  I listen to what my customers are asking for and most importantly, I stand behind the product I sell.  I don’t need tons of different vendors to get the job done, but I need vendors that do a good job consistently.
